Thinking of a Roca Verde – here’s what Josh Wharton had to say…

March 4, 2020 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

Here’s a review of the Roca Verde region from the renowned American alpinist Josh Wharton, who stayed at Casa Quiros with his family last year..

“I’ve been fortunate to travel a lot as a climber, and through all that travel I’ve learned that climbing areas, at least in part, live up to their reputations. Ceuse does have immaculate rock, and a big hike. Catalunya does have thousands of crags in every style, and generally soft grades. And Rifle does have enough hard routes to keep you occupied for a lifetime, and enough kneebars to justify shaving your thighs. Conversely, when breaking off the well trodden paths, you expect something to be a little lacking. The rock might be great, but it rains all the time. There are only ten routes actually worth doing. Or rest days consist of staring at your navel.

And that’s exactly why the Asturias region, and Teverga in particular, was so shockingly good. Since I’d never met anyone that had climbed in the area I expected something would be missing. The routes would be dirty, the approaches epically long, it would rain the entire trip, something was bound to be up. Instead it was one of, if not the best, family sport climbing trips I’ve ever been on. First off, the scenery was green and beautiful, with rolling green mountainsides that reminded me of Switzerland.

Josh Wharton on Samba pa ti, 8a, El covachon, Teverga

There were lovely bike paths on many of the approaches, which often allowed my daughter to ride her bike to the crag. And the climbing was amazing, varied, and never crowded. At the Entecampos I was delighted by 40 meter vision quest wall climbs, where one pitch felt like an entire days worth of climbing. At Bovedas, I was served a slice of humble pie on near horizontal tufas and pockets. And when it did rain there was the incredible, and completely protected Muro Techno stacked with even more routes. On rest days we drove an hour to the coast, and were treated to a beautiful rugged coastline with empty secluded beaches. My daughter splashed in the waves, and afterwards we feasted on four course seafood lunches for ten euro, and toured charming little cities.

But of course there are all sorts of reason you shouldn’t go too. Because of the lack of traffic there aren’t gobs of chalk and tick marks, so on sighting is a little tough. It certainly does rain a bit more than in southern Spain. The wifi is spotty, and the area is too sleepy to have developed its own hashtag. And the water at the beach was a bit chilly in June. Yeah, if fact, the place is total rubbish. Don’t go at all. But if you do bother, please leave your draws on Manumission, I’d like to have another go on that one!”

Blog de Entrenamiento #1 – Volver a lo básico

March 4, 2020 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

Y no quiero echarlas cosas a perder.

Training #1 – Back to Basics

March 3, 2020 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

It’s strange sometimes the things you learn.

Small things which have a big effect. And when I did my year of Lattice training a few years ago one of the key things I learned was pretty basic, but had never occurred to me.

Tom put it like this ‘It’s not how hard a move you can do it’s how hard a move you can keep doing, or put it another way, what can you do when you’re pumped?’ Like I said basic. But it hadn’t really ever sunk in before. Especially in the days when I was super strong but would get six moves up a route and get pumped and fall off. This time it did. And when my test results came back and said that I wasn’t a ‘stamina-proof’ climber i.e. I could get fit it took hold. The nugget wedged in a seam!!

Tom followed this by showing me my training plan, which for the first few months seemed to have very little ‘fun stuff’ and seemed to consist of a lot of dull, easy core and lots of something called continuity.  He saw my disappointed look and continued ‘Richie, everyone needs a base to build on, something to stack all the other work on top of. And at Lattice we call that base continuity. And that’s a key part of getting to the promised land.’

And so that was the second other thing I learned; you can’t build a house without a foundation. That the pyramid that leads to peak performance starts with a wide base. The long, slow run; fifty laps of front crawl; 50km at 100 watts on a bike. It seemed to be same across a bunch of sports. It was the long slow days which allowed the hard days to happen. So, after an operation and series of injuries, I’m back to square one so I’m going back to the plan; and the plan dictates back to basics. So yesterday I did a series of shoulder exercises with very light weights led by a guy on a YouTube fitness channel who looked like a robot and today I did ‘Continuity’.

And it was dull. And I only managed three sets of six minutes.

And I sucked it up and I was happy. Because I’m on the path back. And I’m going to take it easy this time. And I’m not going to blow it.

After losing two years to a freak fall I haven’t got much time left…

And if you want to know what this magic ‘continuity’ training looks like on a very small wall with only a tiny area that’s not overhanging (and thus too steep) here’s it is…luckily not in real time!!!!!!!!!

PS This is probably not called ‘Continuity’ by Lattice or anyone anymore…

PPS  Still don’t understand modern, new-fangled ‘energy systems’ etc etc so no idea what you would actually call this.

PPPS It’s still very highly recommendable…

Steve McClure – Five 8b+ in five days…!?!

February 26, 2020 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

Five 8b+ routes in five days!!! Sounds pretty hard…?

I brought the UK climbing legend Steve McClure to some of the best routes in my Roca Verde book, challenged him to climb a bunch of them and we filmed what happened…

In this video you can see the first part of our 5 day adventure.

Crimpy winter wall climbing in Teverga

February 15, 2020 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

Despite the fact winter in Asturias can be a bit harsh (although nowhere near as bad as the Peak district where I lived for years LOL) it’s sometimes the best time to have a crimpy project as the conditions get pretty good for pulling on small edges.

And Teverga, which has got its fair share of technical wall climbing, has quite a lot of stuff which stays dry throughout the year and at Muro Techo (literally translated as Wall/Roof) we have a venue that good some of the best perma-dry routes from 6b to 8b that are maybe best enjoyed in cooler autumnal/winter conditions. I really like the climbing here (not having the big muscles you need for super steep caves) and have spent many a day on the brilliant routes.

Here’s one I did last year, and one of my faves, Escorpion, 7c+, (which I suggested the name for as it definitely has a sting in it’s tail) which gives you an idea of the style of the climbing here.

Get the guidebook here: buy Roca Verde

And you can check out our guest house for a great place to stay close to the crags of Teverga

So here’s another ‘proudest’ moment, again g So here’s another ‘proudest’ moment, again gritstone, again Stanage, again black and white, but this time a first ascent: Skinless Wonder, E6 6c on Apparent North buttress. The feeling of being able to add a three star line to the queen of grit was, and still is, fantastic. I was lucky to grow up in the age where there were still routes to do on Stanage and this one was a gem; a boulder start followed by a desperate, cheese-grating mantle. It was named for the amount of skin I lost from both my forearm and chin falling on the first attempt. Ouchy…Brilliant photos as ever from Jez Portman which show the angle.
Additionally, it was possibly this line which sparked a mini-revival of this buttress with routes like Black Car Burning E7 6c @robinbarker337, Groove is in the heart E7 7a @neil.bentley.338 and Little Women E7 7a John Welford all following in the next few years making this tiny buttress one of the hardest and highest quality on grit.
#oldman #nostalgia #gritstonedreaming #stanage
One of my proudest moments, making the second asce One of my proudest moments, making the second ascent of Sad Amongst Friends, E7, 6c, Cowperstone, Stanage. This route was made iconic by being on the front cover of the classic Stanage guide, 1987 I think, and featured a youthful Johnny Dawes in bright red tights. It was another step on the ladder of increasingly difficult, different and often unlikely ascents Johnny was making which IMHO revolutionised gritstone (and UK) climbing. Sitting unrepeated since 1984 it was one of the last of that era that was still that way 15 years on, and I'm not even sure that anyone had tried it, despite it being on the front cover, such was his/its reputation.
So in August 1999, yes you can climb grit in summer, I brought, I brought a few pads and a top class spotting crew : Neil Bentley, Robin Barker and Jon Barton, and had a great photographer John Houlihan, courtesy of Jon and his gritstone calender.
Most of my best climbing memories are from first ascents, but this was a day never to forget: repeating an iconic route by the generation's best climber on the queen of grit, and coming away with a stunning photo; it doesn't get much better than that.
#gritstone #heroworship #stanage #climbing
@johnnydawesofficial @newclimberjon @robinbarker337 @neil.bentley.338

A while ago i bought a load of marine grade chemical bolts to give to the equippers of Pechón a brilliant cliff just above the sea in Cantabria. I had been worried for a while about the bolts there and if Roca Verde is going to buy bolts then they should be for things like that: To ensure that the people doing new routes could leave them in the best state. And thanks to herioc efforts by Sergio Torio and Jose Garrido the cliff has been fully re'equiped.
At the same time I was worried about Cuevas del Mar, a really popular sea cliff in Asturias where the bolting was a little haphazard - some new, some old, some glue-ins, some inox, some zincado. So I bought more bolts and got in touch with Cesar who, not only equipped the first routes but also organises the buying of material for FEMPA.

Sector Monstruitos, Quirós, recently updated by @diegonaranjorivas @santi.cuervo.m @refugio_del_llano and @f.e.m.p.a. We went there a week ago and I have to say it's a very beautiful sector with a bunch of good routes. Many years ago, when I was doing the first edition of Roca Verde, I did one of the 6a routes there and I was terrified by the state of the bolts, so I really appreciate the work done to be able to do them without that feeling of stress. 😂😂
The left side has super hard gray limestone and short routes, while the right side is browner and very similar to the Rio sector with vertical endurance routes.
Easy approach and very well-placed bolts. Shade after 11/12 and perfect for hot days.
Very good work 💪💪💪💪 I'll be back soon. And for those who don't know where it is, as you walk up towards La Cubana, if you look to the left, it's there. Easy approach.

Some shots from a quick trip to La pedriza about a week ago with Jairo. A great few days in such a fabulous place with a psyched crew of Brits, Swedes and Spaniards.
Talo's new guide to the routes is great, well worth the cash, and I would also heartily recommend Hostel La Pedriza as a great spot for a beer or food after a long day trashing your tips.
