Teverga – all the stats…

March 21, 2023 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

Everyone knows that climbing is not like stamp collecting where the objective is just to ‘collect’, so if you are only looking for a grade or do a route just to tick it off, these are probably not the best motivations to climb; instead it should be the movement, the moves, the environment and the fight. But, and this is a big but, sometimes we all like to tick something off in our books; at least to say that ‘I did it!’ Or to remember a day or an experience. Also, it’s motivating to make a list of routes that you want to redpoint or places to visit where there are routes with the grade that we are looking for.

To do that without having access to all the information is difficult, looking from page to page in the guide is tricky so, for these reasons (and because there was not space in the book to put them) I decided to make some ‘ticklists’ of the routes and have started with of one of the largest areas in the book, Teverga. The lists are PDFs that can be downloaded and used to build your own lists, tick the routes you’ve done, or, (if you’re a completist), find the routes you need to tick all the routes of an entire grade!!!

It’s should have done something like this a long time ago, but hey, it’s done – Teverga with all the stats! So if you want to know more about the number of routes of each grade in Teverga and download some sheets in order of grade, from IV to 9a, to find your new project, or see which routes you need or want to do or which sector suddenly looks more interesting, click on the links!!

So there are five PDFs: the first with all the Teverga routes from the two IVs to the projects and the others with groupings of grades such as IV – V+, 6ª – 6c+ etc etc

Teverga – All the routes – All 805 routes from IV to 9a + the projects

Teverga Routes IV_V+ – Teverga all the fours and fives

Teverga Routes 6a_6c+ – Teverga all the routes from 6a to 6c+

Teverga Routes 7a_7c+ – Teverga all the routes from 7a to 7c+

Teverga Routes 8a and up – Teverga all the routes from 8a upwards

And to break it down further into the routes by grade, it is easy to understand why Teverga is considered a paradise for those who climb in the sevens, with 368 routes between 7a and 7c+ and its pretty notable that with 60 routes of 7a and  82 of 7a+ it is not essential that you climb super hard either.

And it is also quite obvious why having the massive crag of Quirós next door with its abundance of easy routes: fours, fives and sixes is a good thing. Quirós is the perfect companion for the Teverga where there are more hard routes than easy ones.

All the routes here are in my book Roca Verde 3A – you can buy it here

And Roca Verde Apartment in the heart of Teverga is perfect for anyone wanting to climb here.

But obviously, the routes do not come out in order of difficulty within their grade – I am not stupid enough to go there – and I cannot guarantee that every route is included, because there are a couple of new sectors that do not appear and there are some new routes that I haven’t updated yet. But 99% are there I reckon, and one thing that interests me a lot is how the area has grown; When I published the first Roca Verde, in 2014 there were about 450 routes in Teverga and, for example, the Depuradora and Esplanada sectors had just appeared. Now, more or less, there are 725, an increase of more than 60%, and with completely new sectors and many new lines in old sectors – and even I personally have done 38 new routes in the last few years.

And to add to this work, very soon I hope (with the help of many people) that I can post a list of routes with the equippers marked so that people know who has given their time and vision to open the routes they are climbing!!

Finally, and once again, it must be remembered that the tracks do not exist without a lot of work and almost all the work in Teverga has been supported and material donated by the club in the area; Group of Montana and Climbing Aguja de Sobia. So when you’re there, and next to the car park at the clubhouse, there’s a place to donate money to help the club grow even more.

Check out our destination guides…

March 16, 2023 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

We’ve just posted a couple of Destination Guides for two of the biggest regions covered by the Roca Verde guide to help you get a feel for the cragging available.

Valles de Trubia – The gorgeous, green, Valles del Trubia, situated just south of the capital of Asturias, Oviedo, contain plenty of crags and over 1500 routes, making this a great holiday rock destination. Situated in the north-west of Spain the temperatures here are nowhere near as brutal as the south of Spain; this makes all-year-round climbing possible and a summer Spanish cragging trip a great option! (By the way our new rental pad is here too check out Roca Verde Apartment)
Read more about the Valles del Trubia here

Olympic champion Alberto Gines Lopez climbing in Teverga….

El Desfiladero de La Hermida – Snaking sinuously south from just west of Santander there’s a savage slit that acts as the border between Cantabria and Asturias and the main thoroughfares into the heart of the Picos de Europa. Deep, steep-sided and improbably festooned with a ton of amazing looking faces (not all of them developed) the gorge of the Desfiladero de La Hermida combines perfectly with the crags around Arenas de Cabrales in eastern Asturias to make a brilliant, easy-access, summer and autumn sport climbing destination. Read more about La Hermida here

Gema Lanza climbing at El Salmón, La Hermida

And for a bit more inspiration for a visit here’s my friend Graham on one of the best routes at Teverga, the brilliant Sabrina, 7c, at Pared Negra….

And remember you can order the guide here…

Looking for accommodation in Asturias?

June 19, 2022 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for accommodation in and around the Valles de Trubia – close to some of the best climbing in Asturias – then check out Casa Quirós https://casaquiros.co.uk/

And although we have a lot of booking already we have space in the house from the end of August to the middle of September. You can check out our booking calendar on the website or you can e-mail us at richieandmary@casaquiros.co.uk

Casa Quirós is a picture-book pretty, traditional stone-built Asturian house that has been recently renovated to a high standard and owned by us, the authors of the recent Roca Verde climbing guidebook. The south facing house sleeps five in a twin, double room and single room. Casa Quirós is situated in Aciera, a picturesque traditional Asturian village, in the heart of the parque natural de Las Ubiñas-La Mesa. Surrounded by beautiful peaks and passes the area is perfect for all types of outdoor activity including; climbing, road biking, mountain biking, trail running, hiking, fishing and birdwatching. And although we are ‘out in the sticks’ the house has full, unlimited WiFi for those who need to check in or do some work while getting the outdoor ‘fix.

In this video you can see how close the house is to the famous and extensive crag of Quiros but it’s also not too far – just 15mins drive – to almost 900 routes in Teverga as well.

Quirós by drone – a visual guide to the ‘Queen of crags’

March 12, 2020 by Roca Verde Climbing Leave a Comment

Set in a spectacular location, Quirós is unquestionably one of the best crags in the Roca Verde guidebook with a wealth of climbing across the grades on over twenty separate sectors. Historically important in the evolution of climbing in the Cordillera Cantábrica, its development goes back to the 60s and it is home to the first Asturian 8a. However, Quirós is not stuck in the past; it’s a vibrant, and very popular venue which is cared for by a dedicated crew of climbers including those from the refugio. Most of the sectors have been re-equipped with new bolts and chains and there has been plenty of new routing even in recent years.

Quirós is difficult to summarise due to the amount of climbing but several things stand out. Most prominent is the superb limestone, which, even after more than 40 years has hardly polished; then there is the variety, and although the climbing tends towards slabs or wall climbing, with fantastic examples of both, there are tufas, overhangs and even roofs! Add in a brilliant mix of multi-pitch and single pitch routes and the fact that a lot of the single pitches are of a good length and it’s easy to see why it’s a great destination.

Finally, Quirós is also very much an ‘everyman’ crag with the majority of the routes skewed towards the mid-grade climber as well as plenty for beginners and some superb, harder testpieces too.

Like Teverga many of the greatest Asturian climbers, as well as others, have left their mark at Quirós. Again the following list is probably not perfect but hopefully covers a lot of the main people: Eduardo Velasco, Francisco Blanco, Tino González, Claudio Sánchez, Javier López, Mariluz Santacruz, José Manuel Suarez, Nacho Orviz, Carlos Vásquez, José A Margolles, Plácido Suárez, José M Fernandez, Kike Oltra, Anselmo Menéndez, J Carreras, Jesús Martín, Roberto Magdalena.

Got to give a big thanks to César and his son Oscar for his amazing work in adding a bunch of new route to the big slabs below the old sector of Cueva del mar in Proaza. 💪💪 I didn't have the time to help him clean being a lazy bastard but at least I can help by donating material from the bolt fund I set up with Roca Verde.

Stunner of a day but because the last few have been grim there's not too much dry. The slabs at Quirós may dry, but remember there's only sun until three then in Teverga there's Muro Techo, Entecampos and El rincón that should have stuff. No wind and only 6 degrees in the shade.
Remember our apartment in Teverga is in the heart of this beautiful scenery.

It seems like much more than two and a half years that Alberto Gines López was in Teverga. In July of 2020 just after the lockdown ended we went to the only 9a on Teverga, Clandestino but the start was wet and in the end he could barely try it. However it wasn't a wash out as he did a couple of other routes I managed to get some nice photos and spend another day with a future Olympic champion. It was amazing the year after seeing him win gold at the delayed Tokyo games and it'll be great to see if he can defend it in Paris.
If you fancy checking Teverga outr apartment is taking bookings..

Last day of February and it's a proper winter day. Cold grey and a bit snowy. 7° at the moment. There'll be some stuff dry for the keenest amongst you but I'm off to the board. Worst case the ski stations will be very keen to see you!!

A great spot for these sunny, winter day would be Sector Pelea at the crag of Cabañes in the, La Hermida valley. This crag, though high up has sun until 4pm and is in a stunning location in the shadow of the Picos. It's a great spot for those who climb up to 6b/c and the two routes in the fotos, routes 12 and 17 are both good examples of this. One a 6a+ tricky wall with a difficult bulge to finish and another 6b, with a hard tufa section.
